Pop-punk star Avril Lavigne celebrated the 20th anniversary of her breakthrough debut album, “Let Go,” in a lengthy Instagram post that was meant to express her gratitude to her fans and collaborators. When “Let Go” was released in 2002, it earned a Grammy nomination, went seven times platinum, and opened the door to what had essentially become a boys’ club for modern female punk artists. Lavigne’s songs — including “Sk8er Boi” and “Complicated” — remain popular today, something the singer admitted she never could have imagined when her album was released.

“Today marks 20 years since I released my album ‘Let Go’. I will never be able to fully explain not only how much that album meant to me, but also the monumental impact it had on my life,” her caption begins. “It’s hard trying to figure out how, 20 years later, the songs I wrote when I was 17 would still resonate with people today. It’s pretty crazy.”

But they resonate. The recent re-release of Lavigne’s “Let Go,” with six bonus tracks, has been enthusiastically received by her many fans. Add to that the part where she’s currently on tour promoting her latest album, “Love Sux,” and it becomes clear that she’s still as much of a star in 2022 as she was in 2002.

As for Lavigne, none of her future success would have been possible if her debut album hadn’t become a cultural touchstone of the early years. “It’s set me on a path and taken me to places I never could have expected in my wildest dreams and I’m grateful for that every day,” she wrote.

The “Complicated” singer then thanked her many collaborators, including British songwriter Lauren Christy, of whom she shared two throwback photos, before sharing how grateful she is to her fans. “Last, but not least, thank you to each and every one of you who connected with this album and have stuck with me ever since,” Lavigne wrote. “I say every night on stage how lucky I feel to make music, tour and have as much fun as I do. I share this moment with all of you, because without you these songs wouldn’t have reached the highs that they did.”

It seems that even 20 years later, “Let Go” remains a landmark album, and it was the one that changed Lavigne’s life forever. “A heartfelt and heartfelt thank you to everyone who’s ever listened to my music and stuck around,” she added. “Happy 20th Anniversary ‘Let Go’ and here’s to another 20 years.”
