Citizen’s Mat Kerekes announces new album with Daniel Fang of Turnstile on drums (stream a track)

Citizen leader Mat Kerekes announced a new solo album, Novawhich features drums from Daniel Croc of recent Citizen tour mates Turnstilewhich, according to Mat, “really gave new life” to the songs, and it also includes a song called “Daniel Fang” which is actually a nine second drum solo by Daniel. “I thought it was funny, so I put it on record,” Mat said.

The album is out August 5 via Wax Bodega (Pre-order), and Mat just released the first single “Danger”. It’s more on the jangle pop side than Citizen, but still with a punk edge thanks to Mat’s vocal style and Daniel’s powerful drums. (Actually, it’s kind of like Angel Du$t, the punk-turned-jangle-pop band in which Daniel also plays drums.) “As one of the first songs written for Novait kind of sparked the whole writing process and kindled the fire that I needed to write an album,” Mat says. “The topic is about not feeling heard or seen by someone you once admired.”

Mat also released an acoustic version of “Danger”. Check out both below.
