Jennifer Hudson and Will Smith were the big winners at the 2022 NAACP Image Awards, which were presented on February 26. The virtual show aired on BET and was simulcast on several of its sister networks ViacomCBS.

Hudson won two awards – Entertainer of the Year and Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture for playing Aretha Franklin in The respect. This makes up for her disappointing performance in the Oscar nominations, where she was passed over for both Best Actress and Best Original Song.

This is the second year in a row that the NAACP Award for Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture has been given to someone for playing a music legend. Viola Davis won last year for playing blues great Ma Rainey in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.

Smith won Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture for his performance in King Richard. It is his second victory in the category, after a victory in 2009 for seven books. But this is the first time he has won in competition with Denzel Washington, 13 times winner in the category. Washington was nominated this year for Macbeth’s Tragedy. The actors will face off again at the Oscars on March 27.

The Netflix Movie The more they fall won Outstanding Film. He was passed over for a nod to the Best Picture Oscar, as were the last two category winners, just mercy and bad boys for life. The more they fall to beat King Richardwho is nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars; Judas and the Black Messiah, which was nominated for the Best Picture Oscar last year; and two other films that were passed over for top Oscar nods, USA vs. Billie Holiday and The respect.

The more they fall won four pre-telecast awards – Outstanding Ensemble in a Motion Picture; an outstanding creative breakthrough (film) to Jeymes Samuel, who directed, co-wrote, co-produced and scored the film; a standout compilation/soundtrack album for Jay-Z and Samuel; and Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for Regina King.

The more they fall and the HBO series Unsafe led the nominations for this year’s NAACP Image Award, with 12 nominations each.

Unsafe won as Outstanding Comedy Series for the second year in a row, after finishing blackish reign of six years last year. Its star Issa Rae won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for the second year.

Anthony Anderson, the star of blackish, hosted the NAACP Image Awards for the ninth year. He also won Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series for the seventh time.

Actor Samuel L. Jackson received the NAACP President’s Award. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, received the President’s Award. Nikole Hannah-Jones, the Pulitzer Prize-winning designer behind the 1619 project, received the Social Justice Impact award.

Mary J. Blige sang a medley, filmed at the legendary Apollo Theater in Harlem, that included her current hit “Good Morning Gorgeous.” Earlier in the week, she won an NAACP Image Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for Power Book II: Ghost.

The NAACP Image Awards followed the lead of the Primetime Emmys’ Creative Arts Awards by stripping down their pre-release awards over an entire week.

Jazmine Sullivan was this year’s big winner in the music categories, which were announced on Thursday, February 24. his album Tales of Heaux won an outstanding album. This is the fourth year in a row that an album by a female solo artist has won this award. Ella Mai’s Ella MayBeyonce’s Homecoming: The Live Album and Jhené Aiko Chilombo won the previous three years.
