Here are seven songs to put on your motivational playlist, just in time for the second semester.

Coming out of your Christmas cage and you’re fine

With a few days into the second semester, we could all use as much motivation as possible to prepare for the resumption of lectures and classes. A few days ago I wrote a Guide to Motivating Yourself for Second Semester where I mentioned listening to wellness songs to get you in a positive frame of mind. Following this, I decided to share what are my favorite songs for getting up and out of my house early in the morning.

So here are my best bits for a motivating college playlist. It is by no means ranked as all of them are aces in my opinion. While you don’t hate me for the first song on the list, deep down inside you really love it.

Mr Brightside – The Killers

The ultimate ‘get ready for your party’ track can also be turned into a ‘get ready for uni’ track. Motivate yourself by listening to this track while preparing your healthy breakfast in the morning (Nutella and strawberry pancakes). You will jump in this 9h!

Don’t you want me – The Human League

Just wait for the chorus. That’s what your diploma ranking feels when you slack off! Play ’80s with the AirPods Dad gave you for Christmas because you have this.

SM – Rhianna

Okay, this song is extremely naughty, but imagine yourself strutting around Princes Street before 9am and watching all the people go by with a bit of Rhi Rhi in your ears. This makes your two hour sociology class pretty much bearable.

Don’t stop moving – SClub 7

Not much to say about this one other than it’s a song to really describe united life. But as they say, don’t stop moving!

We R Who We R – Kesha

So now you are really judging my musical tastes (if you’ve even passed The Killers), but bear with me. Just think about that night you’ll be soon, because if you study hard you can play hard too. Sometimes the only way to motivate yourself is to think about the end.

Starlight – Muse

The reality is, you really want to catch a plane away from the start of the semester, but running away is not the solution. Everything will be really fine and you are about to have a degree in your hands, which makes the deadlines and 9 hour lectures worth it. It may not make up for the crushing debt, but we are moving.

The Time I Can Borrow – Calum Bowie

Calum Bowie is an upcoming new artist who rose to prominence by posting videos of himself singing outside his window on TikTok. The song has an upbeat tone to really give you that motivation to ‘get out of bed and put your shoes on and go’.

I promise the early 9am can be tough, but I hope some of these tune suggestions will help you get ready and dancing at the door.
