“I stole CDs from the front of Reader’s Digest”: Myleene Klass’ honest playlist | Music

The first song I remember hearing
I come from six generations of classical musicians, so my father often played Adagio from Spartacus and Phrygia from Aram Khachaturian’s ballet Spartacus. For pop, it was House of the Rising Sun by the Animals. My house was a good old mix!

The first single I bought
When I was 12, I taught piano to other children and a few adults – I had seven students. My pleasure was to buy a top from TopShop or a record from HMV in Great Yarmouth, where I bought Love Shack by the B-52s.

The song I inexplicably know all the lyrics to
I was the church organist, so there’s not a hymn in the world that I don’t know. I can sing every word of Suo Gân, the Welsh anthem from Empire of the Sun. But I absolutely suck at pop lyrics. The fact that I was in a pop band is hilarious.

The song I do at karaoke
If you approach something well known, you are setting yourself up for failure. Hands off Whitney Houston, and just put Beyoncé in a girl gang! But anyone can sing Rock the Casbah by the Clash in this pseudo-singing way.

The song I secretly love but tell everyone I hate
I love Take Me Home, Country Roads by John Denver. But every time you play it, everyone feels like you’re just lowering the mood.

The best song to play at a party
Beyoncé’s Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It) gets everyone up. Or Elvis Presley’s Bossa Nova Baby, one of the sexiest songs ever written.

The song I can’t listen to anymore
I was working with the Disasters Emergency Committee and Save the Children after the typhoon in the Philippines in 2013. They rounded up these kids who had lost their families and parents, and one of them started singing Roar by Katy Perry like a act of defiance. Every time I hear it now, it breaks my heart.

The song that changed my life
Growing up in Norfolk, I loved Kylie Minogue’s The Loco-Motion. But when I heard Gustav Holst’s The Planets, I realized there was another world, and I’d steal CDs off the front of Reader’s Digest.

The song that wakes me up in the morning
When I’m getting ready to do my makeup, my son and I like to dance in the bedroom to Duran Duran’s Ordinary World. When it falls, it falls perfectly.

The song I want to play at my funeral
If Mozart’s Requiem is good enough for Mozart, it’s good enough for me!
