J-Hope took fans behind the scenes of his debut solo album cover jack in the box Tuesday (August 9).

“I’m thinking of an album cover that contains me too, and I’m honored to say that art designer KAWS has agreed to create a great cover art,” the BTS member says directly to the camera in the video uploaded to the The boy band’s official YouTube channel. “It’s a great honour. I’m so happy I can’t hold it back. (English translation courtesy of YouTube.)

Halfway through filming, J-Hope gets a surprise visit from none other than his BTS bandmate Jung Kook, who stops by after having his photo taken for an ID card. After Jung Kook wishes him “good luck,” J-Hope then moves on to his second outfit: the optical illusion-inspired black-and-white checkered costume that eventually became the final look for the cover of the series. album.

“One of the reasons I went with this checkered pattern is because this album is about the crossroads of choices,” the rapper explains. “So I figured that instead of showing the image outright, going with black and white to offer one or the other specific choice gives more clarity.”

Released on July 15, the old-school hip-hop-inspired album bowed to No. 17 on the Billboard 200 as well as No. 5 on the Best-Selling Albums chart and includes the singles “MORE.” and “Arson”. After the unveiling of the project, J-Hope made history as the first South Korean artist to headline Lollapalooza.
