Joanne Evans and Tzu-Kuang Tan Big Winners of the Marilyn Horne Song Contest

The Academy of Music has announced the 2022 winners of its Marilyn Horne Song Contest.

Mezzo-soprano Joanne Evans won the vocal award. Meanwhile, Tzu-Kuang Tan won the vocal piano award.

Evans holds a master’s degree from Bard College Conservatory and was the 2022 Metropolitan Opera National Council Boston District Laureate. Currently Artist-in-Residence at Opera Colorado, Evans has performed with the Berkshire Opera Festival and the Manhattan School of Music.

Tan is a graduate student at the University of Michigan. He was Opera Piano Fellow at the Sewanee Summer Music Festival in 2021.

“The level of talent, skill and artistry of the singers and pianists was most impressive and moving. The repertoire choices were rich and varied, showcasing everyone’s strengths, and expressed interpretations that resonated with the jury and audience for their beauty and authenticity. The competition has given proof that the art song is alive and well and will only continue to thrive,” said soprano Ana María Martínez, who served as a jury member for the Marilyn Horne Song Contest.

Other contest judges include Sasha Cooke and Martin Katz.

The Academy of Music has also announced the winners of its other competitions. Winners include pianist Adria Ye, tuba player Joshua Williams, collaborating pianist Yu-Ting Peng and solo pianist Angie Zhang.
