Meghan Markle’s wedding song requests included Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre

When Meghan Markle married Prince Harry in May 2018, she made it clear from the start that she knew exactly what she wanted. Walking halfway down the aisle herself, for example, and choosing a wedding cake made with lemon and elderflower over the traditional fruitcake chosen by other royal brides. So when it came time to chat about songs with famed DJ Idris Elba, it’s no surprise the Duchess of Sussex knew exactly what she wanted. And what she wanted was Dr. Dre.

Elba recently co-hosted BBC Radio 1 additional rap show with Tiffany Calver and shared a little behind-the-scenes look at her famous gig at Meghan and Harry’s royal wedding in 2018. Calver asked Elba, per People, “What’s the vibe of a Harry and Meghan wedding? Which track is the one that drove everyone crazy?” He replied that “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” by Whitney Houston got everyone onto the dance floor, but there was one song that was specifically chosen by Meghan.

“Still DRE” by Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg. “It was Meghan’s choice,” Elba explained.

Elba opened up before being a little stressed about this extremely important concert. “It wasn’t like my cousin’s wedding. This [reception] wasn’t in the community hall… It was a big, big deal,” he said in November, adding that the added pressure came from his affection for the couple. “They are good friends and I wanted to make sure they had a good time, so there was a lot of pressure.”

It sure looks like the couple had a blast at their reception. Dancing with guests like Oprah Winfrey and Serena Williams into the wee hours of the morning, the music kept people having a good time on the dance floor. ‘It was a huge dance party, everyone was going wild and having fun,’ a source said People at the time. “Just a fun evening and not stuffy at all.”

Dr Dre would most certainly be proud to have contributed to such a relaxed royal wedding, of course.
