Okkervil River’s Will Sheff Announces Debut Solo Album And Tour, Shares New Song

Does Sheffthe founding singer and only permanent member of Okkerville Riverannounced his first solo album, Nothing in particular, due October 7 via ATO (pre-order). The album was recorded with recent/current members of Okkervil Will Graefe (guitar) and Benjamin Lazar Davis (bass), as well as Dawes drummer Goldsmith Griffon, Death Taxi for Cutie pianist Zac Rae, Christian Lee Hutsonand guest singers Cassandra Jenkins and Eric D. Johnson (of fruit bats and Bonny Light Rider). It was designed by John Congleton, Matt Linesch and Marshall Vore. Here’s what Will says:

When I was just a kid, I got caught up in the dream of being a rock star. Like so many other young people, I fell in love with the idea of being called to this glorious path outside of ordinary life. And I found myself in a band with people who felt the same call – especially our brilliant drummer Travis Nelsen, who was like a brother to me. We would trade stories of hilarious antics and outrageous excess and tragic death as if they were almost scripture. Travis and I had a painful argument, and he died within the first few weeks of the lockdown. I think a lot of Nothing Special is about grieving for him, grieving for everything my friends have lost, grieving the myth of rock and rock and roll and trying to open our eyes to a more transcendent reality.

The first single is “Estrangement Zone,” in which Will applies his unmistakable croon to a ’70s-style rock ballad. Check out the Johnny North-directed video below.

Will also announced a record release show at Masonic Lodge @ Hollywood Forever in Los Angeles that will take place the day the album is released, followed by a tour in November that will hit the Midwest and East Coast. The entire tour goes on sale Friday (8/5) at 10:00 AM EST, and all dates are listed below.

NYC gets a show on November 18 at the Poisson Rouge.
