The Devil Wears Prada Drops Furious New Song “Watchtower”

The Devil Wears Prada will certainly catch your eye. The band’s latest song, “Watchtower” arrived in full chaotic glory.

After a pulsating electronic opening sound, the track explodes in your face with utter double-kick ferocity, swinging with urgency until you hit the chorus where you get one of the few moments of clear melodic vocals in the piece. But it’s only a brief respite as the pulse-pounding chaos rushes towards the finish.

“The idea of this song is about a person who is intentionally difficult even though happiness wants to find them,” says vocalist Mike Hranica, giving the listener deeper insight into the powerful subject. “In dealing with my own mental health issues, I’ve found that I often never choose contentment on a foundational basis: almost as if I’ve skipped the first step. The narrator of ‘Watchtower’ is afraid to approach contentment first step and instead runs away to perceive his life as some sort of passive overseer instead.”

The Devil Wears Prada also unveiled a punchy new visual to go along with the song. Watch the clip, directed by Christopher Commons and Kate McFerren, in the player provided below. If you dig the new song, it’s available via streaming services at this location.

“Watchtower” is the second piece of new music the group has released since their ZII EP in 2021, with “Sacrifice” preceding it last fall. In coordination with the release of the new song, The Devil Wears Prada has also made available a new “Watchtower” product through its website. The Devil Wears Prada will also hit the road on March 26 in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Their spring run continues through early May and ends May 3 in Louisville, Ky. See the full itinerary and get ticketing information via their website.

The Devil Wears Prada, lyrics from “The Watchtower”

I call it an emergency
And I can’t keep up
I am assailed by hate
Confined by hazards
Can’t you see the mermaid race?
Flashing in the night

I stay in my tower
Kept in corners away from you
I took away all my power
Kept in the dark with everything to lose

I come out of the street
But always in your heart
I climbed the stairs
And we parted ways

How could I let you go?
Time will tell us
I look down / east towards the sea
I wonder what could have been / you and me
Flashing in the night

I stay in my tower
Kept in corners away from you
I took away all my power
Kept in the dark with everything to lose
With everything to lose
I stay in my tower
Kept in corners away from you

Despite your love
I chose the distance
Despite your warmth
i made it hard
I chose the distance

I come out of the street
But always in your heart
I climbed the stairs
And we parted ways
